The collection of erotic fairy tales and legends or joke stories originating from the territory of present-day Bulgaria and Macedonia, which we present here to Czech readers, is published in an authentic and uncensored form. The thematic range is very wide - from an amusing look at the creation of male and female genitalia, through stories about bawdy popes, naive newlyweds, and philandering husbands, to the exchange of male and female roles, where the comic climax is represented by situations in which a delicate "meeting" between a real man and a man disguised as a woman takes place. The erotic stories of the Balkans, preserved and collected over generations, can thus serve as a unique source for a more accurate and complete formation of ideas about ancestral folk culture. Although eroticism and sex are the fundamental parts of human life, the texts themselves could not have been published before. According to the official Bulgarian view, until recently completely marked by hypocrisy and obfuscation, they did not correspond to the schemas about the nature of 'folk culture'.
